Why pool wiring is different
Pools, hot tubs and spas put people in water next to pumps, heaters and lights. The electrical code has a separate set of requirements for them, covering bonding of metal parts and the water, ground-fault protection, disconnect locations and clearances.
Henderson County lists the addition of electrical wiring, devices or equipment as needing a permit, and requires that trade work be done by appropriately licensed contractors. A hot tub circuit or pool equipment wiring falls under that.
This is not work to do yourself or to have done without a permit.
Permit lines
Henderson County's 2026-2027 schedule lists an above ground pool at $75 and an inground pool at $150. The electrical work is a trade permit, $75. For a pool house or deck, the county has accessory structure lines, with $75 per trade when trade work is added.
A hot tub on an existing deck typically needs only the electrical trade permit. A new deck to hold it adds the deck line.
Ask the pool company and the electrician which permits each will pull.
Short answer: the table below runs from $75 (Above ground pool) up to $150 (Inground pool), according to Henderson County 2026-2027 fee schedule. These are published government figures; labor and materials for the job come from a written quote. Check the current figure with the issuing office before you budget.

| Deck, porch, storage building, garage or workshop, 400 sq. ft. or less | $75 | Henderson County 2026-2027 fee schedule |
| Same structures over 400 sq. ft. | $75 + $0.15 per sq. ft. over 400 | Henderson County 2026-2027 fee schedule |

Bonding and protection
Bonding connects metal parts around a pool, such as the pump, ladders, rails and reinforcing steel, so they stay at the same voltage. Ground-fault protection shuts off power quickly if current leaks. Both are code requirements near water.
Ask the electrician how they will bond the pool or tub, what ground-fault protection the circuits will have, and where the disconnect will be.
For an inground pool, bonding happens during construction, before concrete is poured. Coordinate the electrician's schedule with the pool builder.
Capacity
A hot tub's heater is a large load, often similar to an electric range. Pool heaters and heat pumps are similar. A load calculation shows whether the existing service can carry it.
See panel upgrades if the panel is full or the service is near its limit.
Ask whether the circuit will be sized to the tub's nameplate rating.

Before you buy a hot tub
Read the hot tub's installation manual before you buy. It states the circuit size, whether a ground-fault disconnect is included or required, minimum distances, and whether the tub can be plugged in or must be hardwired. Give it to the electrician when you ask for a quote.
Plan the location with the electrician as well as the dealer. A spot close to the panel shortens the run; a spot under overhead power lines may not be allowed at all. The code sets clearances from overhead lines and from receptacles and switches near the water.
If the tub goes on a deck, make sure the deck can carry the weight of a filled tub with people in it. A new or reinforced deck has its own Henderson County permit line.
Ask about the disconnect location. It needs to be within sight of the tub but at a safe distance, so someone can shut off power in an emergency.
Above ground pools with pumps and lights are electrical work too. The county's $75 above ground pool line is separate from the electrical trade permit.
Pool equipment pads and lighting
Inground pools bring pumps, filters, heaters, automation panels and underwater lighting. Each has wiring and bonding requirements, and lighting near or in the water has some of the strictest rules in the code. Low-voltage lighting systems are common for this reason.
Ask the pool builder and electrician to agree on the equipment pad location early, so conduit can be placed before decking is poured.
Keep the bonding inspection record. If you later add equipment, the next electrician will need to tie into the existing bonding.
Seasonal care
Hot tubs and pools that sit idle through a mountain winter need care. Ask the dealer about winterizing, and test ground-fault protection at the start of each season using the test button. If it fails to trip or will not reset, turn off the circuit and call an electrician. Check the disconnect and outdoor wiring for damage after storms. Never use extension cords to power pool equipment.
Comparing pool and spa quotes
Pool and spa electrical quotes vary mostly with distance from the panel, trenching, and whether the panel can carry the heater. Ask each electrician for the run length and wire size they plan, whether conduit is included, and how they will cross driveways or walks. Ask whether trenching and backfill are included or left to the pool builder. When scopes match, compare totals; when they do not, ask each to quote the same scope so the comparison is fair.
What a quote should list
Ask for the permits, the circuit size and breaker, the ground-fault protection, the disconnect, bonding, the route of the run, any panel work, and trenching or conduit for outdoor runs.
Check the license with the State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors.
