The public part is small but fixed
On most home electrical jobs, the public cost is a single trade permit. Henderson County's 2026-2027 schedule sets the electrical trade permit at $75, with a reinspection at $75 if an inspection has to be repeated. Those numbers are the same whichever licensed electrician you hire.
The rest of the price is the electrician's: labor, materials, equipment, travel, overhead and margin. That part varies a great deal, and the only honest number for it is a written quote from someone who has looked at your panel and the route the wiring will take.
The table below shows how the public lines add up in a few common cases.
Short answer: the table below runs from $75 (Panel replacement, inspection passes first time) up to $200 (Work started before the permit), according to Calculated from Henderson County 2026-2027 fee schedule. These are published government figures; labor and materials for the job come from a written quote.
| Job | Lines that may apply | Published total | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Panel replacement, inspection passes first time | Electrical trade permit | $75 | Calculated from Henderson County 2026-2027 fee schedule |
| Panel replacement, one failed inspection | Electrical permit + reinspection | $150 | Calculated from Henderson County 2026-2027 fee schedule |
| Job needing two trade permits, such as a generator that also needs gas piping | Two trade permits (the county decides which) | $150 | Calculated from Henderson County 2026-2027 fee schedule |
| Work started before the permit | Penalty $200 + permit fee | $275 | Calculated from Henderson County 2026-2027 fee schedule |
What drives the quoted part
Access is the biggest variable. Running a new circuit from a basement panel up through an open crawlspace is quick; fishing wire through finished plaster walls in an older Hendersonville house is slow. Attics with low clearance and blown insulation add time too.
Distance and capacity come next. A new circuit far from the panel uses more wire. A panel with no open spaces may need a subpanel or a replacement. A service at its capacity limit may need an upgrade that involves the power company.
Then equipment: the brand and rating of a panel, breakers, a transfer switch, an EV charger or a generator. Ask whether the electrician supplies the equipment or installs equipment you bought, since that changes warranty responsibility.
Line items to compare
Ask each electrician to list the permit and who pulls it, the scope by circuit or device, the equipment by brand and model, any panel or service work, patching and painting if walls are opened, cleanup, the start window, and the payment schedule.
Ask whether the quote includes a load calculation for jobs that add significant load, such as an EV charger, heat pump or electric range. A load calculation shows whether the existing service can carry the new load.
Ask what happens if they find a problem, such as damaged wiring or an unsafe splice, once walls are open. A written price or hourly rate for unexpected work avoids arguments later.
Remodels and larger jobs
When electrical work is part of a remodel, Henderson County may price the job under its square-footage remodel lines rather than a single trade permit. Those run from $150 for up to 999 square feet to $650 plus $0.30 per additional square foot at 3,000 square feet and up.
Which line applies is the county's decision when it reviews the application. Ask your contractor to confirm the permit approach before the job starts.
The schedule also lists an on-site code consultation at $75, which some owners find useful before planning a bigger project.

Licenses and the value of the job
North Carolina's limited electrical license covers a single project up to $60,000 by board rule, which includes nearly all home jobs. Larger projects need an intermediate or unlimited license. The board's rule counts all wiring, materials, equipment, fixtures, devices and installation in the project value, even if someone else supplies part of it.
A quote from a company whose license does not match the job's value is a red flag. Check the license on the board's site.
See the license page for the classifications.

Hourly, flat-rate and time-and-materials quotes
Electricians price work in a few ways. A flat-rate quote names one price for a defined scope, which is easy to compare but can include padding for unknowns. Time-and-materials pricing charges an hourly rate plus parts, which can come in lower on a straightforward job and higher on a difficult one. Some electricians charge a service call or trip fee for diagnostic visits, credited toward the repair if you go ahead.
None of these is better in itself. What matters is that the method is written down, the hourly rate and markup on parts are stated for time-and-materials work, and the scope of a flat-rate quote is specific. Ask how unexpected work will be priced either way.
For a diagnostic visit, such as a breaker that keeps tripping, ask what the trip fee covers and whether the electrician will explain what they found before doing any repair.
Also ask about payment timing. A deposit for special-order equipment such as a generator is normal; full payment before the work is done and inspected is not.
When the cheapest quote is not the lowest cost
A low quote that leaves out the permit, patching or a needed panel upgrade will grow. A quote with a higher total that includes those may cost less in the end. Compare totals only after the scopes match.
Unpermitted work saves the $75 permit and risks the $200 plus permit fee penalty, a failed sale inspection, or an insurance question after a fire. It is not a saving.
