Generator and Transfer Switch Installation in Hendersonville, NC

Mountain storms take power out. A generator done right keeps it on without back-feeding the line.

Two kinds of generator setups

A portable generator connected through an inlet and a transfer switch or interlock lets you run selected circuits during an outage. A standby generator sits outside on a pad, starts automatically, and switches the house over through an automatic transfer switch.

Either way, the connection to the house wiring is electrical work. Henderson County lists the addition or change in design of electrical wiring, devices or equipment as work needing a permit, and requires licensed contractors for trade work.

Never connect a generator to the house by plugging it into an outlet. That can back-feed the utility line and endanger line workers and neighbors.

Which permits

The electrical connection takes an electrical trade permit, $75 on the 2026-2027 schedule. A standby generator that runs on natural gas or propane also needs gas piping, which is separate trade work; the county decides which trade permit applies, and each is $75.

Starting before the permits brings a $200 plus permit fee penalty, and a reinspection is $75.

Ask the installer which permits they will pull and whether the gas work is done by them or a separate licensed contractor.

Short answer: every dollar line in the table below is $75, according to Henderson County 2026-2027 fee schedule. These are published government figures; labor and materials for the job come from a written quote. Check the current figure with the issuing office before you budget.

Sizing and what it powers

Generators are sized to the loads they need to carry. A small unit may run the refrigerator, well pump, furnace blower and a few lights. A whole-house unit carries nearly everything. The transfer switch decides which circuits are on the generator.

Ask the installer for a written list of what the generator will carry, and how they sized it. Well pumps, which are common outside the city limits, have high starting loads that affect sizing.

Ask about the fuel: run time on a propane tank, or whether natural gas service is available at your address.

Placement

A standby generator needs clearance from windows, doors, vents and property lines as the manufacturer's instructions and the codes require. Exhaust is carbon monoxide; the placement rules exist for that reason.

Towns and homeowners associations may have their own rules about where outdoor equipment goes. Check those before the pad is poured.

A pad on sloped mountain lots may need grading or a small retaining structure, which can add cost.

Fees in context

A generator that needs electrical and gas piping permits collects two trade permits. The table shows the published arithmetic.

Equipment, the transfer switch, fuel piping, the pad and labor are the quoted part, and vary widely with the size of the unit and the distance from the panel and fuel source.

Ask whether the installer will register the generator for warranty and what maintenance schedule the manufacturer requires.

Running a generator safely during an outage

Carbon monoxide from generators is a serious hazard. Never run a portable generator inside a house, garage, basement or crawlspace, even with doors open, and keep it well away from windows and vents. Install battery-powered carbon monoxide alarms. A standby generator's placement rules exist for the same reason.

Before storm season, test the generator under load, check the fuel supply, and confirm the transfer switch works. Many standby units run a weekly self-test; listen for it and check for warning lights.

If the power company crew is working on your street, they need to know the line will not be back-fed. A properly installed transfer switch or interlock keeps the generator separated from the line; an improvised connection does not.

For rural Henderson County homes on wells, plan for the well pump. Without it there is no water, and its starting load is often the deciding factor in generator size.

Maintenance and warranties

A standby generator is an engine. It needs oil changes, filter changes and battery replacement on the manufacturer's schedule, and warranty coverage often depends on that maintenance being done and recorded. Ask the installer whether they offer a maintenance plan, what it costs, and what it includes. Ask also who handles warranty repairs: the installer, the manufacturer's dealer network, or someone else. Keep the model and serial number, the installation date, and the permit and inspection records together. If you sell the house, those records show the buyer the system was installed properly and maintained.

Portable inlet setups

For many households a portable generator with a properly installed inlet box and transfer switch or listed interlock is enough. The inlet is mounted on the outside wall; the generator plugs into it with a rated cord; the switch or interlock keeps the house separated from the utility line while selected circuits run. This is still electrical work under a $75 trade permit, and it should be done by a licensed electrician. Ask which circuits the setup will feed, the cord rating, and how to operate the switch, and practice the changeover once before you need it in the dark.

What a generator quote should list

Ask for the permits and who pulls them, the generator make, model and rated output, the transfer switch type, the list of circuits covered, fuel and piping work, the pad and placement, the start-up and testing, and the warranty terms.
