A charger is a circuit, not an appliance you plug in
Most electric cars come with a cord that plugs into an ordinary outlet, which charges slowly. A Level 2 charger runs on a 240-volt circuit and charges several times faster. Whether the charger is hardwired or plugs into a 240-volt receptacle, the circuit behind it is new electrical work.
Henderson County lists the addition of electrical wiring, devices or equipment as work needing a permit, and requires that it be done by appropriately licensed contractors. A new charger circuit fits that description.
The 2026-2027 electrical trade permit is $75.
Short answer: every dollar line in the table below is $75, according to Henderson County 2026-2027 fee schedule. These are published government figures; labor and materials for the job come from a written quote. Check the current figure with the issuing office before you budget.

Is the panel big enough?
The question that decides most EV charger quotes is whether the existing service and panel can carry the new load. A large charger circuit is one of the biggest single loads in a house, along with an electric range, dryer, water heater or heat pump.
An electrician answers that with a load calculation. If the service has room, the job is a new breaker and a circuit run. If the panel is full, a subpanel or panel replacement may be needed. If the service is at capacity, the options are a service upgrade or a load-management device that limits charging when other big loads run.
Ask for the load calculation in writing, and ask what charger amperage it supports. A smaller charger circuit may avoid a service upgrade and still charge the car overnight.
Where the charger goes
Garage installs are the simplest when the panel is in or near the garage. Long runs to a detached garage or a driveway pedestal add wire, trenching and, for a detached structure, potentially a separate permit line.
Outdoor installs need equipment rated for the location and ground-fault protection as the code requires. Ask the electrician which protection the charger and circuit will have.
If the charger goes on a detached garage that is itself being built, Henderson County adds a trade permit at $75 per trade on top of the structure's permit.

What a charger quote should list
Ask for the permit and who pulls it, the charger make and model and whether you or the electrician supplies it, the circuit amperage and wire size, the breaker, the route and length of the run, any panel or service work, outdoor protection if applicable, and patching.
Ask whether the charger's own settings will be configured to match the circuit, and whether the electrician will test it with your car.
Check the license with the State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors. A limited license covers virtually every home charger job.
Fees in context
If the job passes inspection first time, the county's part is the $75 permit. A failed inspection adds a $75 reinspection. Starting before the permit adds the $200 plus permit fee penalty.
Utility programs and tax incentives for chargers change often; check current rules with your utility and the IRS directly rather than relying on any figure quoted in a sales pitch.
See panel upgrades if the load calculation says the service needs work.

| Panel replacement, one failed inspection | Electrical permit + reinspection | $150 | Calculated from Henderson County 2026-2027 fee schedule |

Charging speed and circuit size
The car, not the charger, sets the maximum rate it will accept. A charger larger than the car's onboard charger adds cost without adding speed. Look up your car's onboard charging rate before choosing equipment, and tell the electrician.
For most households, overnight charging on a moderately sized circuit replaces a full day's driving. A smaller circuit may avoid a panel upgrade entirely. Ask the electrician to size the circuit to the car and the panel, not to the biggest charger on the market.
If you expect a second electric vehicle, say so. Some chargers can share one circuit between two cars, which can be cheaper than two separate circuits.
Keep the charger's manual and the circuit rating with your house records. A future buyer with an electric car will want to know what is installed.
Renters, condos and shared garages
If you rent or live in a condominium or townhome, the charger may need the owner's or association's approval, and the circuit may have to come from a common-area panel or a separate meter. Get written permission before hiring an electrician. In shared garages, the association may have rules about where chargers can go, how electricity use is billed, and who owns the equipment if you move. An electrician can quote the work, but the approval comes first. The Henderson County permit still applies to the circuit, and the license and inspection rules are the same as for a house.
Next step
Know the car's onboard charging rate, the distance from the panel to where you park, and whether the panel has open spaces. Those three facts let an electrician give you a realistic first answer on the phone.
