Why inspections exist
An inspection is the county's independent check that permitted work meets the North Carolina code. For electrical work, that check often has to happen before walls are closed, because once drywall is up the wiring cannot be seen.
Henderson County Permits & Inspections handles inspections for the unincorporated county and, by contract, for Hendersonville, Fletcher, Flat Rock, Laurel Park, Mills River and Saluda.
Inspection requests are typically made by the electrician through the county's system.

Rough-in and final
Jobs that run new wiring in walls usually have a rough-in inspection, after wiring is in place and before insulation and drywall, and a final inspection when devices and fixtures are installed. A panel or service change is inspected before the utility reconnects.
Simpler jobs may need only a final. Ask your electrician which inspections your permit calls for.
Someone may need to be home to give the inspector access to the panel, attic, crawlspace or garage.
When work fails
If an inspection finds a problem, the electrician corrects it and requests a reinspection. Henderson County's 2026-2027 schedule lists a reinspection at $75.
A fair contract puts the reinspection fee on the party whose work failed. Ask about it before signing.
Failures are not always a sign of bad work; inspectors and electricians sometimes read a requirement differently. The correction and recheck are how that is settled.
Short answer: the table below runs from $75.00 (Minimum permit fee) up to $200 (Penalty for starting work without permit), according to Henderson County 2026-2027 fee schedule. These are published government figures; labor and materials for the job come from a written quote.

Permit expiration
The county's FAQ explains that permits expire if work does not start or stalls without inspections for set periods. An expired permit can be renewed at 25% of the original permit fee.
Keep the job moving and the inspections on schedule once it starts.
If a job is abandoned midstream, ask the county about the permit status before hiring a second electrician.
Starting without a permit
Starting work without a permit brings a $200 plus permit fee penalty in the 2026-2027 schedule, and the work may have to be opened up for inspection.
Unpermitted electrical work can also surface when the house is sold, refinanced or insured.
The table shows the published arithmetic for common cases.

Preparing for the inspector
A few simple steps make inspections go smoothly. Make sure the inspector can reach the panel, the work area, the attic access and the crawlspace without moving furniture or storage. Keep pets secured. If a rough-in inspection is scheduled, do not let insulation or drywall go up before it passes.
Ask your electrician to tell you when an inspection is scheduled and whether you need to be home. Some inspections can be done without the owner present if access is arranged.
After a final inspection passes, ask for the result in writing or check it on SmartGov. Do not make final payment on a permitted job until the final inspection passes.
If a job fails, ask the inspector or the electrician what the issue was. Understanding it helps you judge whether it was a small oversight or a sign of bigger problems.
For panel and service jobs, the power company usually will not reconnect until the county reports a passed inspection. Plan for a period without power on those days.
Inspections when you buy or sell
A home inspection during a sale is not a code inspection. The home inspector reports conditions they see; they do not approve work. If the report flags electrical items, a licensed electrician can evaluate them, and any repair should be permitted and inspected by the county like any other work.
Sellers can help a sale by gathering permit records for past electrical work. Buyers can ask for them. Henderson County's SmartGov portal shows permit history for an address.
If records are missing for obvious past work, such as a newer panel, ask the seller about it before closing.
Who to call with a question
For permit status, inspection scheduling and fee questions, contact Henderson County Permits & Inspections at 100 N King St in Hendersonville, or use the SmartGov portal. For license questions or complaints, contact the State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors. For code text, see the Office of State Fire Marshal. For the meter, service drop or reconnection, contact the power company that serves your address. Knowing which office handles which question saves time when a job is in progress.
Inspection timing and scheduling
Build inspection time into the schedule. A rough-in inspection must pass before insulation and drywall, so other trades may have to wait. Ask your electrician how far ahead the county is typically booking and plan the next trade accordingly. A failed inspection resets that wait, which is another reason a careful first submission saves money, beyond the $75 reinspection itself.
Keeping records
Keep the permit number, the inspection results and the contractor's license number with your house papers. A buyer's inspector, an appraiser or an insurer may ask about electrical work, and the permit record is the evidence it was checked.
You can look up permit status through the county's SmartGov portal.
